Karl Da Silva, Course Leader and Lecturer karl_portrait.jpg

Karl Da Silva, a Christian multi-media specialist, was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, then moved to Scotland 20 years ago when he was a boy and has lived in the UK ever since. He is primarily from an arts and literature background. Upon leaving school, he embarked on an art portfolio preparation course at NC (National Certificate) level, where he learned different aspects of art, from print and design to life drawing and painting. By the end of this course, he decided to go and study music, as he was also by this time an avid student of music, specialising in the guitar.

After two years on a music performance HND (Higher National Diploma) course, he entered into the University of Abertay, Dundee, to study BA Honours Computer Arts the following year. 'Because I was interested in art, music, film, scriptwriting, this course was idea as it incorporated all of these elements.' There at Abertay, Karl later obtained his Masters in Science Information Technology, gaining skills in project management, research, and computer administration. Up until accepting his current position as Media Arts Course Leader and Lecturer at Newbold, Karl worked for two years as Audio Lecturer at the University of Abertay and has done a large amount of freelance work with music production, film, web and multi-media design, as well as participated in several volunteer mission trips. Also, Karl has just recently released a debut album of his music on iTunes and Amazon.

Regarding Newbold's new degree, Karl states that his 'vision for this course is not to create robots, to tell students what to do or what not to do, but to creat a haven where they learn and create in a Christian environment, to nurture their own gifts. Media is extremely powerful in what it can do with words, music and images, and has a great influence on today's world. In this degree, students can analyze different styles, effects and approaches within each medium and study their ultimate influence on consumers.' Not only is Karl deeply interested and involved in media, he is passionate about sharing this interest and supporting students in their own creative study and progress.
