Caroline Zagara

Having grown up in a multilingual environment and having had many multicultural experiences over the years, I have gained special insight into the joys and complexities of language learning and culture. Although I have spent most of my life in England, I have had the opportunity of living in various countries such as France, Brazil and Italy.

While living in Brazil, I completed my degree in Education and taught English as a second language in various Primary and Secondary schools, as well as teaching teenagers and adults in language schools. After a few years, I went to Italy where I worked as a volunteer and completed my TESOL certificate. I once again taught English to children for a few months in France. Soon after, I started working in a multilingual customer-oriented role in Switzerland where I interacted in Spanish as well as English and French.

I finally returned to England where I joined the English Language Centre (ELC) at Newbold College in 2017. Here, I have had an amazing teaching experience with students from all over the world, as well as being part of a very capable team of colleagues.

Modules

  • Professional Services

Since 2010, I have taught English as a foreign language to children of all ages, as well as groups of teenagers and adults. I have also previously taught business English on a one-to-one basis.

Here at Newbold, I mainly teach General English with a focus on grammar and vocabulary to elementary/pre-intermediate students. I also teach skills classes such as Reading & Writing and Speaking & Listening for higher level groups. As part of my role as a teacher, I readily tutor students who need extra support in their studies.

  • Areas of expertise

Largely due to my own international immersion experiences, my unique passion lies in teaching the foundation stages. I enjoy the challenges that come with breaking down language barriers by helping students with those first steps in understanding and communicating in English. The progress in foundation language development is very evident and, as a result, very rewarding.

In addition, I am enthusiastic about finding ways to make language learning informative and engaging through different creative projects in and outside the classroom. That being the case, I have very much enjoyed heading projects at the ELC, such as Literature Adventures and Job Interview Skills. I strive to help our students make the most of the language learning process by especially finding enjoyment in it. Furthermore, these projects allow students to focus on other things while using English in a more practical capacity, and therefore allowing us teachers to evaluate how they apply their knowledge of English beyond the classroom.

  • Further information

Although 2020 has brought many challenges due to COVID-19, it has also opened doors. I have had the opportunity to hone my skills in online teaching and IELTS preparation classes. I look forward to further advancing my teaching experience while supporting students with their English language development, whether in person or through distance learning.
