Following the call to enter into a future of Pastoral Ministry, having obtained my bachelors degree in a non-theology related discipline, and having been out of academic learning for over five years prior to the commencement of my studies at Newbold College of Higher Education, the biggest concern I anticipated in studying the Graduate Diploma in Biblical and Pastoral Studies was in not being able to fully comprehend the subject matter without a bachelor’s level of understanding and keeping up with the pace of learning. To my surprise, the Graduate Diploma programme proved to be a well balanced and manageable offering made up of certain modules, carefully selected from the wider BA programme, that was a perfect blend of practical/pastoral modules, alongside the more scripturally-focused, theology-based units.
The best thing about studying the Graduate Diploma at Newbold is the space that is intentionally created to allow for the exploration of one’s own ideas, alongside the opportunity to learn and develop new skills; from learning a new language (Hebrew in my case), to practising the art of preparing and delivering sermons, all the way through to being given a Church placement, where all that you learn in class can be applied in the reality of the real world of congregational worship and Church life.
But be warned: studying theology is not easy! The Graduate Diploma is probably one of the more challenging modes of study – being thrown into the deep end as it were – but with the excellent mentoring and support from the lecturers, who care about your personal and spiritual development just as much as your academic achievements, the course really encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and grow in faith and boldness to become the person God appointed you to be. Studying the Graduate Diploma at Newbold has been an amazing journey of discovery and growth on so many levels. If you think God may be calling you to study this course, I challenge you instead to be still and know that He has.
