WHY STUDY BUSINESS AT NEWBOLD?

In addition to the high quality teaching and education our School of Business provides, undertaking our Bachelor of Science in Business Studies will give you the chance to:

  • Become a competent business person in a Christian context, as you learn from staff who have your academic and ethical growth at heart.
  • Learn practical skills that will prepare you for your career and/or postgraduate study.
  • Visit key business locations in London and Europe as you blend theoretical and practical learning and look for unique internships that will complement your studies and give you an edge as a graduate.
  • Take advantage of our small class sizes which gives you the opportunity for more one-on-one time with lecturers and tutors, and plenty of individual attention when it comes to assessment and questions.
  • Gain a global perspective from our culturally diverse staff and from your fellow students, who represent around 50 different nationalities.
  • Benefit from the experience of our staff, most of whom have real-world business experience.
  • Utilise our academic facilities, from our well-stocked library with its efficient electronic resource service, to the Ellen G. White Research Centre, the first of its kind outside the United States.
  • Study a programme whose credits are transferable and recognised internationally, allowing you control over your future.
  • Take advantage of the range of scholarships available such as those from the Trans-European Division (TED) and the British Union Conference (BUC).
The best thing about studying Business at Newbold has been learning about business from a Christian perspective, and how you can work in the world without losing who you are or changing your values.
The School of Business also assisted us to complete internships with local companies by offering a flexible study programme for the duration of the internship. I have just completed an internship with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), which has given me the best of both worlds. I have mentors at work as well as my lecturers at Newbold.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

Our Bachelor of Science in Business Studies is offered in partnership with Washington Adventist University and can be completed within three or four years of full-time study (depending on your academic background).

You will acquire a solid knowledge of business and finance principles, and the use of computer systems in a business environment. You will also study advanced core business disciplines related to management, marketing, accounting and operations, and will further develop communication and presentation skills through a range of assignments designed to develop your ability to critically evaluate and present information. Finally, you will learn how to develop and implement business strategy as well as learn about the role of leadership in its development and implementation.

Intake: If you are planning on completing the programme in four years, you will begin at this stage. See ‘Entry Requirements’ for more information.

During the Foundation Year of your degree you will develop your research and communication skills so that you will be able to be a better undergraduate student and, ultimately, a more professional business person. You will gain knowledge in areas such as history, fine arts, algebra, literature, religion, science and health principles that should give you the ability to confidently interact with your business colleagues in a social context, an attribute that is useful in networking and maintaining business relationships. Consequently, you will develop the social skills necessary to be a better communicator and business executive, through exposure to new cultures in a diverse, supporting learning environment.

Intake: If you are planning on completing the programme in three years, you will begin at this stage. See ‘Entry Requirements’ for more information.

You will acquire a solid knowledge of business subjects needed to advance to more advanced areas of business and help you improve your personal skills, including an understanding of accounting, statistics, the business environment from an economics perspective and how to use microcomputer applications. At this stage you will also develop further your academic research skills and be required to undergo an intensive programme of personal business skills development (eg CV/resume preparation, job interview techniques). As in all years, you will also explore how your Christian beliefs can be incorporated in the life of a businessperson.

You will study all the major functional areas of a business operation, specifically marketing, finance, managerial accounting, business law, management information systems and human resources with an emphasis on developing an understanding of how organisations are resourced and how resources are utilised to ensure successful performance. Christian business ethics and the role of the non-profit organisation will also be a central theme as you expand your knowledge of different cultures on our campus. At this point in your degree you will be required to finalise your CV/resume and encouraged to start searching for an internship in your chosen career area.

In your final year, you will complete your holistic academic journey. By studying subjects such as business strategy, operations management, financial statement analysis and international dynamics of business, you will have an expansive and more informed knowledge base of how organisations should operate efficiently and effectively. Uniquely you will dedicate a major amount of your time on a business research subject that is relevant to your career aspirations. Topics explored in the past have included the UK banking industry, the role of the church treasurer, reflections on the experience gained in your internship, and surveying the global IT industry. You will at this time also be encouraged to begin final preparations for either your master’s degree or future career.

To fulfill the requirements of the Bachelor of Science in Business Studies you will complete the following modules:

  • Principles of Accounting I (ACCT211) – 3 credits

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Our School of Business offers you the opportunity to develop your business skills and begin to prepare you for your career. We do this by delivering practical instruction in the academic modules required in the Bachelor of Science in Business Studies and by offering you the opportunity to participate in three non-academic professional development programmes: the Personal Development Plan Programme, Business Connect Programme and Business Alumni Connect Programme. While each of these three programmes is distinct, their objectives are similar in that they aim to prepare for life after you leave the College.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN PROGRAMME

The Personal Development Plan Programme (PDP) is a tutor mentorship programme that will provide you with the opportunity to access academic and career planning advice. We strongly encourage all our Business Studies students to take advantage of this programme as it provides a useful approach for the student to monitor their academic progress while at the same time exploring their career preferences. Central to this programme is the PDP document, which will help you and your tutor set out your academic, personal, and professional aims. It also provides the option for creating any associated action plans needed to achieve these aims. One-on-one discussions between you and your assigned tutor are used to create each PDP and, in conjunction with the modules BUAD201 Business Skills and BUAD 305 Advanced Business Skills, should help you to

  • Develop your own Curriculum Vitae (CV)/résumé
  • Enhance your interview techniques
  • Help you with strategies to search for an internship
  • Assist you with postgraduate degree planning
  • Develop good business etiquette
  • Explore different career options

BUSINESS CONNECT PROGRAMME

The Business Connect Programme is an initiative that aims to augment the PDP process by helping you to gain a better understanding of the type of career you would like to pursue when you graduate. This programme typically offers you one opportunity each year to become familiar with a commercial or not-for-profit firm that is actively looking to hire undergraduates into a structured internship programme. These firms, through the internships they offer, will expose you to what it is like to work in a specific industry and in a certain functional role. Early on in this process, you will need to think about which career you might like to pursue, what industry best matches this choice, and which firm will best enable such a route. If you do decide to apply for an internship, you can gain valuable personal business skills during the application process and incorporate the development of these skills into your PDP (e.g. CV development). Irrespective of the result of the interview process, you are likely to gain valuable experience in striving towards your career goals.

It should be stressed that it is entirely your own responsibility to secure their own internship while at Newbold since an internship experience is not a specific requirement for the Bachelor of Science in Business Studies. However, by being encouraged to develop a Personal Development Plan and having access to the Business Connect Programme and Business Alumni Connect Programme (see below), you will be supported in your attempts to plan for your professional future.

From a practical perspective, the structure of this programme tends to take the form of either a single in-house seminar and/or a visit to the company. In the past, trips with potential internship opportunities have been organised to the following firms

  • JP Morgan Chase & Co.
  • Boehringer Ingelheim
  • Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)
  • Gieves and Hawkes
  • The European Bank of Reconstruction

An example of how this programme has worked in the past can be found in the success some of our students have had in gaining an internship with HPE. At the start of each academic year, business students are made aware of the HPE internship programme and encouraged to apply. The HPE internship is a 12-month full-time programme, with an annual salary and full benefits. It provides you with a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in a world-renowned firm and functional training in areas such as marketing, sales and operations. Not surprisingly, these positions are highly sought after and competition to secure them is intense. By following the PDP process, students that have applied for these positions have been supported with personal CV workshops, interviewing training and mentorship support throughout the interview process. Despite intense competition from candidates from other universities, since 2014 six of the seven students we have assisted have been successful in gaining one of these internships, thus demonstrating the value added we provide in our Business Studies degree.

BUSINESS ALUMNI CONNECT PROGRAMME

The Business Alumni Connect Programme draws upon over 2,500 Newbold business alumni around the world by offering them the chance to share their own professional experiences with our current students. Our alumni live in over 30 countries and each year we invite one of them to come back to speak about their Newbold experience and about the impact their professional skills, attitude, and/or faith in God has had on their career. These speaking events have become very popular in recent years as they have not only provided our students with valuable insight into the professional experiences of some of our most successful graduates, but they have also yielded valuable networking opportunities. In conjunction with the PDP process, this programme has in the past offered several of our students the opportunity to explore some of the theoretical concepts they have learned in the classroom and discussed with their tutor. Some of the past and recent guest alumni speakers that have returned to our campus include representatives from

  • 3M,
  • Adobe Systems,
  • Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA),
  • Adventist World Radio,
  • BBC,
  • Commerzbank,
  • Dun and Bradstreet,
  • LG Electronics,

  • Product sales and design, retail, or import/export

A number of our graduates have gone on to work for some of the most reputable organisations in the world, including Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Commerzbank AG, Koninklijke Philips N.V., International Business Machines (IBM), Honeywell, 3M, General Electric and many other high-profile companies. Others have gone on to become entrepreneurs and have found success in a number of private enterprises.

Many of our graduates have also been interested in pursuing a career in the not-for-profit sector and have found success in working for organisations such as the United Nations, Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), World Vision, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations, and the Red Cross. The Adventist Church in particular has been a major career target for our graduates, many of whom now work as treasurers and in other key leadership positions around the world.
