The Roundup – Episode 16

A collective of ideas to inspire you, each and every week.

At Newbold, we believe in the power of Monday motivation.

The late American writer, civil rights activist and academic Maya Angelou once said: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour and some style.”

We’ve heard it all before, and we’ll probably hear it again – 2020 has been a year like no other. Humanity has been tested and we have all experienced circumstances that we could never before have even imagined. It is important to remind ourselves that it is ok not to be ok, and that for many of us we are simply only able to survive through this. But maybe there’s another way we can look at the year we’ve been handed.

This week, Danilo shares content to encourage us to look at things with a different angle. Through this fog, we can thrive as individuals and as a global society.

Film of the week: "Capernaum"

"Capernaum " is a Lebanese drama film that was released in 2018. It follows the story of a boy who sues his parents in protest of the life they gave him. It is an eye-opening watch that reflects a similar story of many children around the world, that live in incredibly difficult circumstances that they didn't choose for themselves. An important watch, which unfortunately is still relevant in 2020 - and reminds us of how fortunate we really are.

Book of the week:

"Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus" by Nabeel Qureshi

This is a powerful autobiography that follows Nabeel Qureshi’s dramatic journey from Islam to Christianity. This book offers the opportunity to learn a lot more about Islam, as well as gaining an understanding of what it takes for someone to actually make this journey – a change of religion, and even society.

“Providing an intimate window into a loving Muslim home, Qureshi shares how he developed a passion for Islam before discovering, almost against his will, evidence that Jesus rose from the dead and claimed to be God. Unable to deny the arguments but not wanting to deny his family, Qureshi’s inner turmoil will challenge Christians and Muslims alike”

Qureshi sadly passed away at age 34 in 2017, but left a legacy. Danilo comments “he left a major mark on Christian literature with this book”.

Song of the week: "Thrive" by Casting Crowns

Danilo loves this track by this contemporary Christian group, released in 2014. A standout line for him is: "We are not made to only survive, we were made to thrive." If you feel like you're simply surviving through life or a situation, know that there's always a different angle to see things. You're meant to thrive.
