“My theology teacher casually named the missionary nurse I had been searching for since childhood—the woman who helped me find a home. Reconnecting with her just two hours away was the most sacred gift Newbold ever gave me: gratitude and healing.”

I came to Newbold in 1988—new to Europe, new to the educational system, new to academic English… and not bold at all. But Newbold knew how to hold my newness and slowly shape it into boldness.

My first year was spent in the boys’ dormitory, and the following four years in Binfield, where I lived in a small flat with my family. Those years were life-shaping in more ways than I can count.

One story, however, I will never forget. One day one of my theology teachers asked me to see him in his office to discuss a paper I had written. After reviewing my paper, he casually asked where I came from. I told him I was originally from Ethiopia but living in Sweden. “Ethiopia?” he said with sudden interest. He mentioned he once knew a missionary nurse who had worked there in the 1960s.

I asked for her name. And when he spoke it, a shock went through my whole body. He had just named the woman I had been searching for since childhood—the woman who had helped me find a home and a family when I needed it most. For years I had wondered where she had gone, hoping one day I might thank her. And now, suddenly, I learned she lived only two hours from Newbold. Three days later, my wife and I got in the car and drove to meet her. I was finally able to look her in the eyes and thank her for the role she had played in my life. It was one of the most sacred gifts Newbold ever gave me—reconnection, gratitude, healing.

By the time I left Newbold in 1993, I had earned a BA and an MA, served as president of the Student Association, and—most importantly—discovered a courage and confidence that have shaped every chapter of my journey since. After Newbold I have served as a pastor, career counsellor, school administrator, university lecturer, executive secretary, self-employed consultant, and now I have the privilege of serving as Union President in the Swedish Union.

I am deeply grateful to my teachers and mentors at Newbold—and I give all glory to God, my Redeemer and Sustainer, who guided every step of the way.
