MA Student Receives Second Place in International Preaching Award
Newbold College of Higher Education is delighted to celebrate Mia Orgla, an MA student who has been awarded Second Place in the internationally respected Haddon W. Robinson Biblical Preaching Award, presented by the Evangelical Homiletics Society (EHS).
The award honours the legacy of Dr Haddon W. Robinson, whose influential book Biblical Preaching and decades of teaching shaped modern evangelical homiletics. Each year, undergraduate and master’s students who are Associate Members of EHS submit a 15–20 minute sermon video. Entries are evaluated by a task force of EHS members using criteria rooted in Robinson’s principles of biblical preaching.
This year’s competition focused on sermons drawn from prophetic texts, prepared for a local church audience. Mia’s sermon was on Revelation 7:9 and was titled “A Case for Compassion”. Her homiletical idea was that Jesus died for all, and therefore the mission of the church should be driven by compassion.
Mia’s recognition places her among a select group of emerging preachers whose work stood out in a diverse international field. Her achievement reflects her dedication to her studies, commitment to thoughtful ministry, and the supportive environment of the Centre for Ministry and Mission.
"It is wonderful for Mia's preaching to be recognised in this way. Mia has always taken great care with her preaching, and this award is recognition of that. As her teacher I couldn’t be prouder." Jonathan Holder, Guest Lecturer in Homiletics
Reflecting on the honour, Mia said: “I was surprised to receive the award, but I really appreciated it. I think the real reward, however, was the fact that after preaching this sermon, people thanked me for changing their perspective.”
Recipients of the Haddon W. Robinson Biblical Preaching Award receive a scholarship, complimentary admission and meals at the EHS Annual Conference, and publication of their sermon in Preaching magazine—affirming both the quality of their work and their potential as future leaders in the church.
We warmly congratulate Mia on this well-deserved recognition, celebrating the devotion and promise of emerging preachers as they prepare for ministry that makes a difference.
