Black History Week: Journeys

As part of the College’s Black History Week, Newbold College lecturer Julian Thompson lovingly shares the remarkable journey of his grandfather, Arthur Malcolm, the first Afro-Caribbean barber in Reading.

Julian’s memories of Arthur’s bustling home, vibrant life and captivating storytelling, particularly the tales of Anansi, reflect the enduring cultural legacy of the Windrush generation. Julian’s tribute honours this generation, highlighting their significant contribution to the diverse fabric of the country.

In an age marked by historical revisionism, he underscores the importance of remembering and celebrating their profound and lasting influence.
